30 years of Hendor D90: the high-impact vertical pump range

The quality of Hendor pumps and filtration systems is defined by smart design and innovation. A clear proof of this is our successful D90 series, introduced 30 years ago for the surface finishing industry. The design of this vertical pump series revolutionised the market and served as an example for many pump manufacturers. And to this day, this series is still an unrivalled reference.

Need for compact vertical pumps

It was in the early 1990s that our former managing director Henk Bohncke completely revised the product design for the vertical pump. He noticed clear signals in the market, especially in Reel-to-Reel applications, requiring a more compact design. With an eye on efficiency, user-friendliness and durability, Henk therefore designed the series of compact, reliable and repairable pumps.

Compactness of the pump was desired 30 years ago because of process optimisation and -precision in Reel-to-Reel electroplating lines. Smaller tanks were used and instead of one large pump, several small pumps were installed in the process bath. This created the need for significant pump space savings. Normally, vertical pumps in particular took up extra space due to their discharge pipe on the outside of the pump. Henk saw an opportunity for improvement here by integrating the discharge pipe with the pump housing, which made the pump as a whole much more compact. It not only saved space, but also made the pump more accessible to the user during installation or maintenance. This was exactly what the industry needed and made the D90 an instant success.

Hendor D90 series: durable vertical pumps with long service life

Reliability is another aspect this pump series excelled at. The D90 series was one of the first vertical pumps to be injection-moulded. The precise and robust quality of the injection-moulded components - together with the solid electric motor - resulted in less pump downtime and therefore longer service life. In the process, this technological breakthrough significantly improved production efficiency and made the manufacturing process faster, more reliable, and more cost-effective. This allowed the product to meet growing demand faster.

Finally, the repairability of the pumps was improved. By focusing on functionality in every component of the vertical pump, fewer parts were ultimately needed. Repairs could therefore be made faster and easier. The result was thus lower maintenance costs for the end user. On top of that, the balanced design also ensured that the pump would last at least 10-20 years. Meanwhile, Hendor customers are still operating a D90 series vertical pump from the very beginning.

All in all, it is safe to say that the D90 series vertical pumps inspired and challenged many to innovate. To this day, we are proud of this piece of legacy we were able to give to the industry. It is proof that even 30 years ago, we consciously wanted to contribute to a green surface industry using smart technology.
